The Harvest

A killing frost spread over the garden a few days ago, even though we’ve warmed up again since then. The sweet peas, which like it cool, survived just fine, along with all the perennials, but the tomatoes, the black-eyed susan vine, and the moon vine (which sadly never bloomed any six-inch white flowers in the moonlight and so was just a tall green plant) all started turning black.

It was with thankful hearts then, that we sorted through our 17 tomato plants in the veggie box and filled our buckets and boxes with the end-of-season harvest. That’s tomato sauce, tomato soup, tomato juice, fried green tomatoes
