Montgomery

Northern flicker One elegant bird visits each time the tour group comes through to the Umbrella Cafe. For awhile we didn't know what kind of bird he was, but thanks to our new National Geographic bird book, now we do. This lovely creature is a Northern Flicker woodpecker, and he's about four times the size of the other woodpecker that visits. This one is too big to eat at the cafe, but he's just the right size to wrap himself around the suet feeder and peck away at the birdseed cake inside. (The magpies tried that but they're too heavy and keep falling off.) An elegant bird deserves an elegant name, so we're going to call him Montgomery. Yes, the naming adventures continue.
